Ak Dan Gwan Chil (ADG7)

3-page Special Feature on Songlines Magazine (NOV 2020 issue)

"a band of outrageously dressed superheroes playing a dynamic amalgam of every perfect dance style ever invented with such an infectious lack of self-restraint that you fear autocratic governments the world over will proscribe them before their citizens can be contaminated. Would that fly?" The good news for Tinseltown is that such a group already exists, they come from Korea and they are called Ak Dan Gwang Chil (or ADG7). You’ll believe this band can fly."

Coreyah has released their 4th album "Clap & Applause" celebrates their 10th anniversary with a dance-inducing, exciting new vision for Korean world music.

"K-art-rock? K-counterculture? Whatever you call it, it’s K-great. From K-drama on Netflix to K-beauty in Boots, South Korea has been on a remarkable rise to prominence in the Western mainstream. Springing forth from the Trojan Horse of the K-culture juggernaut come Coreyah, standard bearers for K-counterculture. On Clap & Applause the group deftly weave traditional elements into an anarchic art-rock opus. ... Standout ‘Yellow Flower’ sees vocalist Ham Boyoung adopt a disinterested delivery that recalls Alanis Morissette. This reminds us that K-culture, whether alternative or mainstream, is in conversation with our own. Coreyah have given voice to an infectious fusion that demands attention."

#1 Coreyah (7:00 - 7:30 PM)
A new breed of music that breaks the barrier between traditional and contemporary popular Korean music.
“Mesmerising and wonderful” ★★★★★ Broadway Baby
There are few band across the world that so expertly meld classic, traditional instruments and vocalization with entirely modern ones as Coreyah. Indeed, their new breed of music breaks the barrier between the traditional and the contemporary. Rooted in Korean folklore, Coreyah strives to create “living Korean music” by assimilating various world music heritages, such as Anglo-American rock, Balkan gypsy, and a variety of musical genres from South America and Africa.

#2 Joe Kye (7:45 - 8:15 PM)
Born in Korea and raised in Seattle, violinist-looper, vocalist, and composer Joe Kye has drawn rave reviews since launching his music career in 2013, “discharging world[s] of emotion” and delivering “divine messages” with his lush string loops and eclectic style (Guitar World). Drawing upon his migrant upbringing, Kye blends indie-rock, jazz, classical, pop, and world folk to create a unique sound that “leaves everyone in awe” (Sac News and Review). "A single violinist...one mesmerizing symphony" (Sacramento Bee).

#3 Park Kyungso X Kim Chaek (8:30 - 9:00 PM)
As a gayageum player, composer and improviser, Park Kyungso sways between traditional and contemporary music – a truly preeminent contemporary musician. Kim Chaek takes inspirations from all continents- Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas- and translates them with the beautiful language of drums and percussions.

Although the music of Park Kyungso X Kim Chaek started from different roots, their music is presented through the common denominator of Korean music, improvisation and avant-garde. A duet of gayageum and jazz drums will invite audience to a new level of musical experience that they have never seen before.
